Hors d’oeuvres for flute solo is a collection of 5 very short movements. The title comes from the whimsical, almost tongue-in-cheek nature of each; the piece isn’t a full 3 course meal, but an assortment of contrasting “hors d’oeuvres.” The work is in an arch form, with the first and last being related in character and each using 6 note complementary sets. The second and fourth movements are built around transpositions of different trichords derived from the hexachord the first movement is built on, and the third movement is built on octatonicism.
