Commissioned by the zooDuo

Mirror Images was written in late 2018 and was premiered on March 10th, 2019 as part of the NASA Region 2 Conference. The piece was commissioned, premiered, and subsequently performed two more times by George Rosas and AJ Pratt of the zooDuo.

The work is built in two movements, each depicting a different aspect of mirrors. The first, “Reflections,” is based almost exclusively on contrary motion. Each instrument is on opposite sides of a figurative mirror, moving in the same intervals in opposite directions. The second, “Refractions” represents a violent jarring between atonal and jazz-inspired motives. The two saxophones begin in unison, but quickly drift apart. The tenor saxophone restates the same motive, but “refracted” through a different scale. Ultimately, the two end up on the same side of the figurative mirror, moving in similar motion in consonant intervals.
